Subject:  Bermuda Race Week 2005
Wick McNeely, our Past President, represented the Chester Yacht Club in the International One Design Fleet at Bermuda Race Week last month with his crew of Carter McNeely, Cathy Chandler, Alan Chandler, and special guests Steven and Jocelyn Swinamer.

"We had five days of racing and it all was very well organized and enjoyable. We managed to get one second out of the fleet of 14 boats. All the rest was a learning experience with us being at the back of the pack. It was a close fleet with lots of wind."

Thank you to the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club for hosting the event and for the generous hospitality they extended to our team.
A special "thanks" to Rick Thompson in Bermuda for putting it all together.

We are working on getting a crew from Bermuda here to compete in the Bluenose Class, Chester Race Week.

To the members of the Nova Scotia Bluenose Class Association:

The Bermuda International One Design Fleet has very kindly extended an invitation to the Nova Scotia Bluenose Class Association to send one team of 5 crewmembers to particpate in Bermuda Race Week April 2005.They have offered us accomodation and an IOD to race.

Bermuda Race Week starts on April 23rd 2005 with registration and finishes on April 29th with the last race and prize giving.
There are direct flights to Bermuda from Halifax every Saturday and returning on Saturdays as well so that would be easy for Maritimers to get there that time of year.
The Racing commences on Sunday April 24th 2005 and finishes on Friday April 29th. There will be between 9 and 14 races in Total ( up to 3 per day depending on conditions).
Racing will take place on Sunday through Friday with a spare day on Wednesday. The IOD’s will have participants from Bermuda, Europe and North America. A total of 14 boats will make up the fleet for the event. Other boats sailing on the course will be J24’s, J105’s and Etchells. On a separate course will be dinghy’s. The IOD’s will require a total of 5 people.
Pictures of the boats and details can be see on the RBYC web site as well as the Bermuda IOD fleet website.

Those who wish to apply need to be members in good standing of the NSBA for 2005. If you are not, now might be a good time to pay your dues. Please apply as a whole team stating whom the captain shall be. Should more than one team apply, preference will be given to the crews that have won Maritime Bluenose Championships in previous years. If more than 2 winners apply with teams, we’ll draw straws. We need to have a team selected before January 15 2005.

Bermuda is warmer than NS in April! Looking forward to hearing from you.

ROUÉ COLLECTION TO BE LAUNCHED

HALIFAX, NS (2003 December 9) - In response to numerous inquiries regarding the availability of drawings of W.J. Roué, Canada's first and arguably most famous naval architect, a series of artwork to be known as the Roué Collection will be released in November of this year.

"It is unbelievable the number of inquiries we receive regarding the availability of these plans," said Joan Roué, great-granddaughter of W.J. Roué. "Some are interested in building new vessels to a Roué design but most are interested in acquiring copies of plans for a vessel they own, once owned or on which they sailed. The perpetual passion for Roué designs is similar to the passion that propelled W.J. Roué to his global success."

The Roué Collection is a celebration of the accomplishments of W.J. Roué. Each piece in the series first edition will feature two spaces for copies of drawings for a vessel, and two more spaces for a picture and a short biography of the designer. A fifth space is available to include a photograph of the vessel built to the featured design. In some cases a copy of the cover page of the design specifications can be alternatively inserted in this space.

"It is important that these drawings be admired and appreciated for the true pieces of art that they are," said Joan Roué. "It is obvious each stroke of the pen was made with great pride. The attention to detail is incredible - especially considering the drawings were made without electronic assistance."

Each piece will be custom made and the purchaser can choose the design as well as provide a photograph of a vessel built to that design. Two frame moulding styles (gold-colour and mahogany colour) are available to suit any decor.

The first edition of the Roué Collection will be limited to production of 100 pieces including 17 of the most famous design from Roué's hand, Design No. 17: the schooner Bluenose. The Bluenose series will be identical and include scale copies of the sail plan and the keel plan, a photo of W.J. Roué (circa 1920), the cover page of building specifications for Design No. 17, and a biography of W.J. Roué specifically pertaining to the creation of Bluenose.

Each piece will measure approximately 36 inches wide x 28 inches high with an attractive frame, double mat and non-reflective glass. They will include a Certificate of Authenticity and a signed copy of A Spirit Deep Within, a biography of W.J. Roué's life and career, as told by great-granddaughter Joan.

The cost for the limited edition Bluenose series from the Roué Collection will be $750 plus shipping. All other prints will cost $550 plus shipping. A limited number of Bluenose prints will be available for Christmas delivery.

Other prominent Roué designs include: Bluenose Class, Roué 20, Bluenose Junior, Highlander, Norseman, Zetes and the first sectional barge (a vessel used to land troops during World War II) and more. Roué created more than 175 designs of many vessel types.

All materials used in the Roué Collection will be of the highest quality, just as W.J. Roué insisted in the construction of vessels to his design.

Inquires regarding the forthcoming Roué Collection should be emailed to RoueInfo@WJRoue.com

Pictures can be viewed online at WJRoue.com .

Hello everyone

As per our discussion at the Annual meeting at the Mecklenburgh Inn in August,Tom Mulrooney has had discussions with Charles Brown at Herring Cove Marine regarding the "Fiberglass Deck Mould"

They have arrived at an arrangement (see below) which seems sensible to me.

I would recommend that Tom proceed, and I thank him for his efforts. If you have any questions on this, please feel free to call me at 434-971-2686 or Tom at 902-275-5130.

Exciting news on the racing front! We will have at least a couple of additions to the fleet next year.

1.Deb Presson,Janice Anderson and Mary Filbee have picked up a glass boat.

2.I hear that Bobby Young is shopping for a bluenose.

3. Have you heard of others? Let us know. These girls are going to have fun with Megan Porter,Carter McNeely, Alisa Chandler,Cathy Chandler,Stuart Craig,Carolina LaFleche all racing at one time or another.

Dear Member:

RE: Fiberglass Deck Mold

As agreed at the annual meeting, we have had follow up discussions with Charles Brown of Herring Cove Marine. He has provided us with a contract and I am asking you for direction whether we should proceed. It is not commercially viable for Charles to build the mold himself, as it would take 10 decks to pay for the mold.
I believe it is a project worth doing as it will result in a better made and cheaper boat. Charles believes that with a deck mold he would significantly lower the costs of the deck construction.
We would like your response by October 15, 2003.

Regards

Wick McNeely
President
Maritime Bluenose Association

"This agreement is between the Maritime Bluenose Class Association and Herring Cove Marine Ltd.

The Maritime Bluenose Class Association agrees to loan five thousand ($5,000) to Herring Cove Marine Ltd. for the construction of a deck mold for the bluenose class sloop.
Herring Cove Marine agrees to repay the loan at the rate of five hundred dollars ($500) upon the sale of a molded deck, whether the deck is part of a boat or sold as a deck only..

This agreement terminates upon the sale of ten decks, and ten subsequent payments to the Maritime Bluenose Class Association, whereupon Herring Cove Marine Ltd. becomes sole owner of the deck mold. In the interim, the ownership of the mold shall be in the proportion of the repayments of the loan.

Herring Cove Marine Ltd. shall have exclusive rights to the use of the mold throughout the duration of this agreement.

This agreement may be transferred to another manufacturer with the outstanding debt in the event that the bluenose hull mold and construction of this class of boat is transferred to another boat builder. The Maritime Bluenose Class Association shall be notified before the agreement is transferred and may within thirty days of notification wish to negotiate full ownership of the mold for themselves and ,or enter into a new agreement with the subsequent boat builder.
Herring Cove Marine Ltd. will insure that the mold is cared for in a reasonable manner while in their care."
